Spanning almost 750 acres and over 600 climbing routes, the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve is a defining destination for climbing in the Red. The PMRP is managed by the Red River Gorge Climbers’ Coalition (RRGCC) and offers crag after crag of sought-after sport and traditional routes across a wide range of grades. From steep endurance testpieces to technical faces and approachable moderates, PMRP packs an impressive range of climbing into one expansive preserve.

Bald Rock Recreational Preserve (BRRP)

This 102-acre parcel of land, which contains some of the most iconic RRG rock climbing, is often considered an addition to the PMRP. The RRGCC purchased this property in 2017, adding another 230 climbing routes. This area includes the renowned Motherlode crag, home to a dense concentration of classic steep Red River Gorge routes.

Directions & Parking

The majority of the Pendergrass-Murray Recreational Preserve (including Bald Rock Recreational Preserve) is accessed via Bald Rock Fork Road.

Parking for PMRP is relatively expansive compared to other areas in the Gorge, but road conditions matter. You can park in the upper lot at the top of the Lode Hill (GPS: 37.6418, -83.7125), which is recommended for vehicles without 4WD/AWD or with lower clearance. The lower lot at the bottom of the Lode Hill serves as the primary parking area for BRRP.

Continuing down Bald Rock Fork Road, you’ll find additional parking for Flat Hollow and Sore Heel, as well as for Drive-By, Bob Marley, and Chica Bonita.

The remainder of PMRP is accessed via Fixer Road in the Coal Bank Hollow area (GPS: 37.6720, -83.7339), home to popular crags like Solar Collector and Gold Coast.

Waivers & Access Considerations

All RRGCC climbing areas require visitors to fill out their waiver in order to recreate in the area.

Road conditions vary widely throughout the year. Traffic, weather, and visitor usage can drastically affect the condition of the gravel roads. Before driving down into these areas, check current conditions on the RRGCC’s PMRP info page.

Climbing Style

PMRP and BRRP are known for the steep cave climbing that defines the Red River Gorge, with powerful, overhanging routes featuring big movement and plenty of pump.

But variety is what makes this area so popular. You’ll also find technical face climbing, classic trad lines, and even quality slab at Chica Bonita, making this one of the most diverse areas in the Gorge.
