Miller Fork Recreational Preserve is the third tract of land managed by the Red River Gorge Climbers’ Coalition, encompassing 309 acres of forest and hundreds of climbing routes, with more still being developed. In 2017, the coalition paid off the loan that secured this stunning property and its cliff lines, ensuring they remain protected and accessible to climbers. The area has steadily grown in popularity thanks in part to stellar crags like Fruit Wall, Infirmary, and Chaos, which offer some of the area’s most sought-after sport climbing.
Directions & Parking
Follow Shoemaker Rd for 3.5 miles until you come to the MFRP sign that turns into a gravel road. Follow this road (Hell Creek Rd) down until you get to the first right. Take this road for 1.1 miles and you will reach a large parking area. MFRP Parking GPS: (37.689, -83.6764). This is the only parking for all of MFRP.
There is free parking at Miller Fork, but access requires driving down a steep gravel hill followed by a few miles of rough, rutted gravel road. While some 2WD vehicles have made it to the main lot, there are plenty of stories of 2WD cars and campervans needing a tow when attempting to climb back out. 4WD or AWD with good clearance is strongly recommended.
The RRGCC has recently acquired additional land at Miller Fork and is working to develop a second parking area that will be more accessible for 2WD vehicles. Stay tuned for updates.
Waivers & Access Considerations
All RRGCC climbing areas require visitors to fill out their waiver in order to recreate in the area.
Road conditions vary widely throughout the year. Traffic, weather, and visitor usage can drastically affect the condition of the gravel roads. Check current conditions on the RRGCC’s MFRP info page before driving down.
MFRP is still a fairly new area with new routes and walls being developed. We strongly encourage helmets to be worn when climbing in MFRP, as many routes are still cleaning up and the rock can break.
Climbing Style
Miller Fork is primarily known for its sport climbing, with a strong concentration of well-bolted routes across a variety of angles and styles. You’ll find everything from steep, jug-hauling lines to long, technical routes on slightly overhanging terrain, as well as delicate slab that rewards precise footwork. The diversity of movement here makes it a well-rounded destination, whether you’re looking to pull hard or dial in technical finesse.
